2018 Day of Caring

Last Friday, August 3rd we held our annual Day of Caring. We had 26 companies and organizations supplying over 240 volunteers!  These volunteers went out to 15 project sites and provide support towards a total of 35 projects. A light breakfast was served by Dan Lew Exchange and special guest Miss Ohio sang the National Anthem.

Day of Caring is always a great opportunity for team-building and provides volunteers the chance to make a positive impact in their community. Volunteers spent the day with a United Way Partner Agency or other non-profit agency completing projects and increasing their awareness of local human service agencies and discovering what people working together can accomplish for their community.

VIP Sponsors for this event include: Rinehart, Walters, Danner Insurance, OhioHealth, Richland Bank, Therm-O-Disc, MT Business Technologies, and Warren Rupp. Our Gold Level sponsor is Milliron Industries. Special thanks go out to our In-Kind Sponsors: Lowes of Ontario and Dan Lew Exchange.

Power of the Purse 2018 – another huge success!

The United Way of Richland County held its seventh annual Power of the Purse event on June 7th at the Mid-Ohio Conference Center. This year saw the biggest turnout with almost 350 attendees!

“This event has become a signature event to raise funds for United Way,” said Dan Varn, Executive Director at the United Way. “It has been very successful the past few years and it continues to grow each year. I am constantly hearing how this event is the favorite for many in our community.”

The event focused on a live auction of designer, lady’s handbags as well as a silent auction with a variety of items from gift baskets from local businesses to jewelry. This year there were even more items up for bid and the live auction featured local men as models. A few of the amazing live auction items were: The ultimate date night to see Hamilton in Cleveland – hotel & $100 gift card included as well, a brand new Burberry purse – a Power of the Purse first, Wine Tour for 8 (private limo & coach wristlets for all), New York City trip for 4 (airline voucher, Hilton on Times Square and Broadway.com gift card included), a 2 night getaway to the beautiful Lambertville Inn in New Jersey, OSU football tickets, tickets to the Cleveland Cavs, Indians and Browns…and so much more! The event was catered by The Vault and had a cash bar.

“Half of all the proceeds of the event go to fund our Big Red Bookshelf project,” said Varn. “This project provides gently-used or new books to children from birth to 3rd grade. The donated books are located on bright red shelves located at community sites where young children visit. The children can take books for free to keep that their home. We have doubled the number of bookshelves in the community and have given out thousands of books since we started just a few years ago.” This year for each new or used child’s book that attendees brought in; they got a raffle ticket for a chance to win a red Coach purse valued at over $200.

Hope to see you all next year!

United Way to host Annual Awards Dinner

The United Way of Richland County is hosting their Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Ed Picken’s Café on Main. The event will kick-off at 5 p.m. for a social hour with the dinner and awards starting at 6 p.m.

The Annual Dinner is held each year to recognize campaign achievements and honor volunteer leadership. The event will recognize United Way volunteers, contributors, workplace partners and partner agency programs dedicated to addressing the needs of those in Richland County. “We are excited to recognize so many great companies and individuals for all they did in support of the community,” stated Dan Varn, United Way’s Executive Director.

We also ask everyone attending to consider supporting our Big Read Bookshelf initiative by bringing a new or gently used book for children aged birth to 3rd grade. Our Big Red Book project places bright red bookshelves in the community where families and young children visit. The bookshelves are fully stocked with new or gently used books that have been donated by community members. Children are invited to take a book home to keep – read, learn and share!

United Way of Richland County is a local organization led by local people; Members of the Board of Directors and Allocation members are volunteers. The United Way of Richland County fights for the Health, Education, and Financial Stability of EVERY person in OUR Community.
